Introduction

Details

We are a community, brought together by our mutual employment with OBR Cooling Towers. This message board is a place to communicate and create connections with OBR teammates.

The OBR Message Board is hosted through a service called Discord. Discord is free to use and requires an account.

The Discord link found at the top of the page, and on the Employee Portal page, will direct you to the OBR Message Board. You will be directed to create an account if you do not have one already. This guide will take you through the account creation process.

Create Your Account

Details

Clicking the OBR Message Board Discord link will direct you to this screen.

Click the blue Register button beneath the large purple Login button.

The Register button will direct you to this screen.

Choose your username.

Details on choosing your username

There are many message boards on Discord. This username is your account’s username. This is the username that any Discord user will see. I am clarifying this because I would not recommend entering your first and last name here. I would follow the ‘CKirchens’ style naming at the least. You could go with something more creative like ‘TowerGuru’ or similar.

You do not need to worry about adding numbers at the end of your username to differentiate it. Discord adds a four digit code to all user accounts. The four digit code helps identify your profile. Two users can have the same username, but two users cannot have the same username and four digit code. This allows users more flexibility when creating their username. When you join the OBR Message Board you will get to set a nickname that is your full first and last name, and it will be private to the OBR Message Board.

Once you have entered your username, click continue. You will be directed to this screen.

You are human, so check the box. Once checked, you will be directed to this screen.

Enter your date of birth and click Done. You will be directed to this screen.

Enter the email address and password you would like tied to this Discord account. Use an email that you actively use, you’ll need to verify your account with it. It will also be your password recovery email. Once entered, click Claim Account.

These menus will clear once you select Claim Account. Your screen will display the OBR Message Board Request Access chat. Ignore this for now. Navigate to the email account you used to claim your Discord account. In this example, a Microsoft Outlook account was used for Discord account creation. Select the email from Discord with the title ‘Verify Email Address for Discord’.

Click the Verify Email button and you will be directed to this screen.

Click Continue to Discord and you will be directed back to the OBR Message Board Request Access chat. This means your account has been successfully created.

Set Your Profile Picture

Details

In the lower left corner of the screen you will see your username above a four digit code. To the right of your username will be icons for microphone, headphones, and a cog for settings.

Click the settings cog, you will be directed to the My Account Settings menu.

Click the Edit Profile button.

You will be directed to the User Profile Settings menu.

Click the Change Avatar button.

A window to your files will be opened and you will be able to select the picture you would like to use as your profile picture. The file type will need to be a .PNG or a .JPG.

Once the picture you would like to use is selected, you will be able to zoom and position the image. When you are happy with its placement, click Apply.

You will be taken back to the User Profile Settings menu and in the Preview window to the right you will see your new profile picture.

You do not need to update your About Me unless you would like to.

Details about privacy

You are creating an account to connect and communicate with other OBR team members on the OBR Message Board. Before you can use the OBR Message Board you will have to request access. It is strongly encouraged to choose a profile picture that shows your face.

If you are concerned about privacy, after uploading your profile picture, click the Privacy & Safety Settings menu button.

You will be directed to the Privacy & Safety Settings menu. Locate the Who Can Add You As A Friend section.

Uncheck Everyone and Friends of Friends.

The OBR Message Board is a server. Unchecking Everyone and Friends of Friends means that the only people who are in the same server as you, the OBR Message Board, will be able to add you as a friend.

Discord is not like Facebook. There is no ‘search users’ function. With Everyone and Friends of Friends unchecked in the Privacy & Safety Settings menu, only members of the OBR Message Board will be able to interact with you. Someone who isn’t a member of the OBR Message Board would have to know your username and 4 digit code to be able to access your account.

If you have your privacy settings set this way, only join the OBR Message Board, and keep your username and 4 digit code to yourself, no one else will be able to see your account. You will essentially be completely private.

Once your account is created, your profile picture is set, and your privacy settings are to your liking, proceed.
